Skin Cancer in Focus

Good weather is here, and we're all eager to get out in the sun and fresh air. School is out and summer vacation is underway. But whether you enjoy a good game of tennis, gardening or running, the Antigua and

Barbuda Cancer Society - Why Me? is urging everyone to take precautions when out in the sun.

Head of the Society Carolyn Aziz told Caribarena the society is focusing on Skin Cancer Awareness. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Aziz said, “Actually, we here in Antigua don't have a high rate of skin cancer among the population, however, when it does occur, it is almost always fatal.

The reason is that as a black skinned people, we don't think about getting burned in the sun or over-exposure in the sun, so therefore when we are affected, we tend to take it as a minor problem. The same applies with moles... a lot of people think they are cute, but they can be deadly.

Skin cancers are rare, but they do happen right here in little ole Antigua and Barbuda.”

Why Me? distributes health information to the public. For further information on skin cancer, call them at 764-2561/562-6295.
